How Brulin Cleans Satellite Launch System Components For European Manufacturers

In the advanced space technology industry, where precision and reliability are critical, a European manufacturer of satellite launch system components sought our industrial parts cleaning expertise.

Tasked with the responsibility of cleaning their mission-critical aluminum pieces, we embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. With a commitment to surpassing expectations, we set out to provide a superior cleaning solution tailored to their exact requirements.

These aluminum pieces were vital to the launch system, requiring reliable bonding of an insulating substrate layer. The customer needed the removal of debris and hydrocarbon oils from the surfaces prior to bonding. The success of the satellite launch system depended on the cleanliness and durability of these components.

Our Industrial Parts Cleaning Process Solution

To tackle this challenge head-on, we recommended the use of AquaVantage® 1990 GD, our trusted aqueous detergent specifically formulated for the removal of debris and hydrocarbon oils from metal surfaces. With a concentration of 10% +/-, this detergent proved to be highly effective in dissolving oils and lifting debris, ensuring the aluminum pieces were meticulously cleaned.

To facilitate the cleaning process, we utilized a large custom-built spray wash cabinet with a detergent tank size of 2000L. This sizeable cabinet allowed for efficient and thorough cleaning of the components. The temperature was carefully set to 65°C (149°F), ensuring optimal cleaning performance without compromising the integrity of the aluminum pieces.

In addition to the cleaning process, we implemented a rigorous rinsing procedure. The components underwent a thorough two-stage rinse, ensuring the removal of any residual detergent and leaving the aluminum surfaces pristine and ready for bonding.

The Results

The results of our cleaning process were exceptional. The customer reported very good cleaning performance and bonding results, surpassing their previous trichloroethylene (TCE) cleaning process. The main quality control parameter, bond strength, and durability were significantly improved. This achievement instilled confidence in the customer as they prepared for the satellite launch, even if it meant tolerating a 4-month delay until the scheduled launch date.

Our commitment to excellence extended beyond cleaning effectiveness. We closely monitored the pH levels to ensure consistency above Brulin’s recommended lower control limit of 9.5 for aluminum substrates. This attention to detail further contributed to the overall success of the cleaning process.

Furthermore, the extended tank life of three months allowed for cost-effective and efficient operations, reducing downtime and ensuring continuous productivity.

By recommending the use of AquaVantage® 1990 GD, employing a large custom-built spray wash cabinet, and implementing a thorough rinsing procedure, we achieved outstanding results. The meticulously cleaned satellite launch system components met the highest standards of cleanliness, providing the customer with confidence in the bonding process and the durability of their satellite launch system.
