How Brulin Cleans Oils Off 3D-Printed Components Designed For Space Missions

When it comes to the hardware used in the space industry, even the smallest details can make a monumental difference.  

Our customer entrusted our team of parts cleaning advisors with the challenge of removing Hangsterfers S787, a commonly used lubricant in machining applications, from their Durafoam 3D-printed aerospace alloy components.  

The customer required the utmost cleanliness for their 3D-printed components. The Hangsterfers S787 lubricant had to be completely eliminated, ensuring no residue remained that could compromise the integrity and performance of these critical high-precision components in the demanding conditions of space. 

Our Industrial Parts Cleaning Process Solution 

To address this challenge, we planned and executed a cleaning process tailored to meet the customer’s requirements.

With the goal of achieving complete soil removal, we developed a precision parts cleaning process using our most trusted aqueous detergent, AquaVantage® 815 GD. With AquaVantage® 815 GD’s extensive industry approvals, conformance, and test compliance, it was clearly the right chemistry for the job. 

The process consisted of two wash cycles, with each cycle utilizing AquaVantage® 815 GD at a concentration of 10-12%. The components were subjected to a carefully controlled temperature of 135-140°F (57-60°C) during each 3-minute wash cycle.  

Following the wash cycles, a thorough rinsing procedure was employed, utilizing a two-stage deionized (DI) water rinse. The rinse temperature was maintained at 130-140°F (54-60°C), ensuring the removal of any remaining residue. 

The Results 

The outcome of our newly-designed industrial parts cleaning process was exactly what the customer needed. AquaVantage® 815 GD performed flawlessly, achieving complete soil removal from the 3D-printed aerospace alloy components. The implementation of our cleaning process resulted in the thorough degreasing of the components, leaving them free of Hangsterfers S787 and ready for the subsequent stages of processing.
